We are happy to announce another round of funding for The 1772 Foundation’s Matching Grant for Historic Preservation! We are accepting Letters of Inquiry through our new Grant Portal shared with Connecticut Humanities. Qualifying preservation projects include exterior painting, finishes, and surface restoration; upgrade/install fire detection, lightning protection, and security systems; repairs to/restoration of porches, roofs, and windows; structural foundation and sill repair/replacement; chimney and masonry repointing.
Preservation Connecticut is also proud to announce a new pilot program in partnership with The 1772 Foundation: the Climate Action Matching Grant. This pilot program is up to $10,000 for climate resiliency projects for historic buildings and follows the same 1:1 matching requirement as the historic preservation grant. Eligible projects are: energy audit assessments, insulation upgrades, alternative energy sources (solar, geothermal, wind, etc.), upgraded/converted systems or appliances, and storm windows. Water mitigation projects (wet proofing crawl spaces, gutters, site work, etc.) may be considered, but preference is given to decarbonization upgrades. Applications for lifting or relocating buildings will NOT be considered. Other projects may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Upgrades need to be consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Applicants are encouraged to leverage programs offered by utility providers.
Letters of Inquiry will be accepted until November 25, 2026. Applicants are encouraged to submit LOIs for both grant opportunities, however, applicants will only be selected to submit final applications for one grant. Preservation Connecticut staff will review and invite applicants with the strongest applications and/or best cases for funding.
To be eligible to apply, organizations must have a 501(c)(3) IRS designation. Organizations also must have closed any previously awarded matching grants to be eligible to apply. Funded by a generous donation from the New Milford Trust for Historic Preservation, Preservation Connecticut is pleased to announce another funding round of the Charles Beach Barlow Fund for Historic Preservation, an annual matching grant program of up to $20,000 to support the preservation of historic properties in New Milford, Connecticut.
The Fund is named in honor of Charles Beach Barlow (1926-2016), a descendant of a prominent New Milford mercantile family, long-time resident, philanthropist who supported a wide range of local efforts. He owned the last private residence on the town green, a historic Colonial home (1774), which he bequeathed to the New Milford Trust for Historic Preservation in 2018. His generosity and interest in historic preservation was widely known. He was a true citizen of the town and a keeper of its history.
As the home became more difficult for the New Milford Trust for Historic Preservation to maintain, the decision was made to sell the property to an owner who is conscious of its historic past and will care for its maintenance. The Charles Beach Barlow Fund was created with the proceeds from the sale of the property. Grants from the proceeds of the Fund will be awarded annually through a matching grant program. The total number of grants awarded each year shall be based upon demand and competitive application. Applications for funding are due by December 18, 2026.
