May 15th: Middletown’s Beman Triangle

Join us on Wednesday, May 15th at noon to hear about one of the earliest free Black neighborhoods in Connecticut. Located in Middletown, and commonly called the Beman Triangle, this small activist community had a significant role in Black freedom and resilience in the state before the Civil War. Weslyan Professor, Jesse Nasta will present about his research and findings about this community and its long-term effects.

Jesse Nasta, PhD, is a professor in Wesleyan University’s Department of African American Studies and Executive Director of the Middlesex County Historical Society. He began researching the Beman Triangle as a Wesleyan University student in 2006 and is writing a book about this remarkable neighborhood and its regional, national, and global connections to 19th-century Black community and antislavery networks.
