Preservation Connecticut is hiring a full-time, two-year field service archaeology consultant.
The field service archaeologist with a specialty in archaeology will promote an understanding and stewardship of archaeological resources throughout the state by working directly with individuals, organizations, communities, municipalities, and project proponents. In the spirit of Preservation Connecticut’s Circuit Rider program, the archaeology field representative will be able to provide on-Site technical assistance regarding archaeological issues, promote awareness, and advocate for archaeological preservation. Specific task may include, but not be limited to:
Workshops, Trainings, and Guidance Documents:
- Provide training for organizations, municipalities, or agencies regarding archaeological issues
- Conduct outreach meetings regarding archaeology in the state to raise awareness
- Liaison with professional archaeological associations
- Assist with the preparation of documents related to archaeological best practices
Support SHPO Staff with State Register, National Register, and Archaeology Preserve Responsibilities
- Identify archeological sites Eligible for listing on the State or National Registers of Historic Places or designation as a State Archaeological Preserve
- Prepare or provide support for preparing designation documents
- Update State Register, National Register, and Archaeology Preserve documentation
- Respond to inquires related to archaeological designation
Support SHPO Staff with Environmental Review Responsibilities
- Make field visits to confirm archaeological potential
- Review and comments on archaeological assessments
Support SHPO Staff and the Office of State Archaeology with Inventory Responsibilities
- Assist with maintaining and updating state inventories and maps for archaeological use
- Prepare archeological site documentation for state inventories
Support Municipalities, Organizations, Professional Researchers, and Others with Archaeological Guidance or Compliance Responsibilities
- Provide support to consultants gathering research for compliance projects
- Develops and write archaeological components of Plans of Conservation and Development
- Assist in planning of projects falling under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the Connecticut Environmental Policy Act
- Provide technical guidance to state agencies, town governments and property owners on archaeological issues
Support SHPO staff and Preservation CT with Preservation Restrictions or Easements
- Attend meetings and site inspections of properties with restrictions or easements that may affect archaeological resources
- Provide technical assistance or guidance on how to avoid harming archaeological resources

The minimum qualifications should be:
- A Master’s degree in archaeology, anthropology or closely related field.
- One (1) year of full-time experience or equivalent specialized training in archaeology research, administration or management.
- A supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology.
- Demonstrated ability to carry out research to completion.
Preferred Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of relevant State and Federal laws, statutes and regulations; considerable knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of archaeological survey, excavation and laboratory operations; knowledge of Connecticut’s prehistoric, historic and industrial archaeological heritage; knowledge of basic photographic techniques; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to read and interpret written materials. Salary $40,000 annually as a consultant, for a two-year position.
