In partnership with the Connecticut League of History Organizations, The Fairfield County Preservation Network (FCPN), a program of the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County, presents a program in which the story of a recent preservation failure to save a precious Building from demolition is met with the story of a success in rescuing two threatened historic treasures. What was it that prevented the one from being destroyed (in order for a developer to build a gas station) and the others from being rescued?
Hear the stories of the destruction of The Sanborn Library, in Bridgeport, designed in 1922 by Leonard Asheim who was also the architect of the Klein Memorial Auditorium, area school buildings, and the West End Congregation/ Achavath Achim Synagogue on the National Register of Historic Places, and of the successful rescue of The Parsonage (c. 1840) and The Hubbell Houses (mid to late 1700s) in New Fairfield in 2006. Preserve New Fairfield was created specifically to save the two houses.
Following these two short presentations, Tod Bryant, President of the Norwalk Preservation Trust, and member of the FCPN Steering Committee, will succinctly describe the process for finding and listing historic properties with the Connecticut Register of Historic Places.
