2024 UPDATE!

The researchers for this project have identified 50 Lustron houses in Connecticut- and they made a great website too!

One of our Preservation Connecticut members is undertaking a project to identify Lustron houses built in Connecticut from 1948 through 1950 and they need your help.

Lustrons are unusual because they are constructed of steel frames with distinctive enamel-covered steel roof tiles and 2’ x 2’ colored enameled steel panels for siding.  The Lustrons are modest size houses—most are 31’ by 35’ (1,021 sq ft) with two bedrooms and one bath.  They were prefabricated in a Columbus, Ohio factory and shipped to states east of the Rockies – including at least 42 to Connecticut.

It is unclear how many of these extraordinary houses remain standing in our state. Some have been razed to make way for new construction while others have had new siding, roofs, additions, and other changes so that a house may not be easily identifiable as a Lustron at first glance.
If you are aware of any Lustron houses, or locations where Lustrons once stood, please let us know and we’ll pass your information along to our member. You can reach us at contact@preservationct.org or fill out our contact form.
